We were best friends and same age when we lived a few doors apart in Corstophine, Dunedin 1949-53. I was at Kings High, and he was at Mosgiel District High. But in Corstorphine we were very close, shared setting up the Corstophine rugby team and I shared his bed the night before we flew to Auckland. We moved to Auckland, he to Ranfurly. I then married and moved to London, ended up on the Guardian, and then the EU commission and was in delegations in NYC, Brussels, Tokyo, Ankara and Budapest. One of my regrets was never seeing Nev again. But I followed his illustrious life as a pillar of the Ranfurly community. Great guy. Mike Lake
